Are Egg Shells Good for Dogs? The Boundary Cases and How to Read Them
An egg shell is roughly 94% calcium carbonate, and one shell contains 2.07 g of calcium. For a 15 kg (33 lb) adult dog, whose daily recommended allowance is 1 g of calcium, that single shell is about two days' supply. Egg shells are therefore a real calcium source, and whether they are good for your dog depends entirely on whether the rest of the bowl already supplies that calcium. On a complete commercial food it does, and the shell is redundant. On an unformulated home-prepared diet it usually does not, and the shell corrects one genuine shortfall while leaving the others untouched. For a large-breed puppy under 14 weeks, a shell a day can carry the diet past its recommended maximum on its own.
I am a greenkeeper, not a vet. My work is putting measured quantities of mineral onto grass cut at three millimetres, on sand that drains before the rain stops. It teaches you that you cannot see a nutrient problem until it has already cost you something. I lost half a green learning it. The same blindness applies to a dog's skeleton, which is why the arithmetic below beats anyone's impression of how the dog looks.
What is actually inside an egg shell
Chicken egg shell breaks down as 94% calcite (calcium carbonate), 1% magnesium carbonate, 1% calcium phosphate and 4% organic matter, according to Ngayakamo and Onwualu's 2022 review in Heliyon. Measured as elemental calcium, Schaafsma and colleagues reported 401 ± 7.2 mg of calcium per gram of egg shell powder in Poultry Science in 2000, about 39% calcium by weight. Bartter's 2018 study in Maternal & Child Nutrition, which examined grinding shells into staple foods in rural Tanzania, worked from 380 mg per gram.
Phosphorus is the figure nobody quotes. Calcium phosphate is about a fifth phosphorus by mass, so the 1% calcium phosphate fraction leaves roughly 0.2% phosphorus in the shell, near 2 mg per gram. Set that beside the calcium and egg shell has a calcium-to-phosphorus ratio somewhere around 200:1.
That ratio is why shell behaves as a lever rather than a supplement. FEDIAF's September 2025 nutritional guidelines set the acceptable calcium-to-phosphorus window for adult dog food at 1:1 to 2:1, and the Merck Veterinary Manual gives 1.2–1.4:1 as optimal. Shell moves calcium and leaves phosphorus exactly where it was. That is useful in one situation and unhelpful in every other.
How much calcium does one shell put in the bowl
Brun and colleagues measured it directly in the International Journal of Food Sciences and Nutrition in 2013: a single egg shell contains 2.07 ± 0.18 g of calcium. A shell weighs about 5–6 g, the figure Therdthai's group used developing calcium-fortified dog biscuits in Heliyon in 2023.
Set that against requirement. The National Academies' summary of the NRC's Nutrient Requirements of Dogs and Cats gives a daily recommended allowance of 1 g of calcium and 0.75 g of phosphorus for an adult dog weighing 33 lb (15 kg) and eating 1,000 Calories a day. One shell is two days of calcium, delivered at once, with no phosphorus alongside it.
FEDIAF works in concentration instead of daily grams. Adult dog food should supply at least 1.25 g of calcium per 1,000 kcal, against a nutritional maximum of 6.25 g per 1,000 kcal — a ceiling AAFCO introduced in 1992 and FEDIAF adopted. If a complete food sits around 2 g per 1,000 kcal and you add a shell to a 1,000 kcal dog, the day lands near 4 g. Under the ceiling. Also double what the animal was ever asked to handle.
Healthy adults have real headroom here, and it is worth saying plainly. FEDIAF cites work by Stockman and colleagues in which adult dogs were fed 7.1 g of calcium per 1,000 kcal at a 1.6:1 ratio for 40 weeks with no adverse effects recorded. That is why the honest answer to "will one shell hurt my grown dog" is no, and why the answer inverts for a puppy.
Complete food or a formulated homemade diet: where shell calcium belongs
Owners usually frame this as egg shell versus a bought supplement. The type of diet decides it first.

Pedrinelli, Gomes and Carciofi analysed 106 home-prepared recipes published in Portuguese for the Journal of Nutritional Science in 2017, eighty of them for dogs. Calcium fell below recommendations in 73.2% of the dog recipes, copper and choline in 85.4% each, and every diet in the set was deficient in at least one nutrient. Adding shell to a recipe like that raises the calcium and leaves the rest exactly as it was.
The inverted ratio is the sharp end of it. FEDIAF cites LaFlamme and Jowsey, and Schneider and colleagues, for the adverse effects of phosphorus excess in adult dogs, particularly where the ratio is inverted to 0.4:1 or worse — the sort of figure an all-meat bowl produces without anyone intending it. That is the one case where shell calcium does exactly the job it is shaped for.
A diet written by a veterinary nutritionist is a different object. It names a calcium source and a weight, and egg shell powder is a respectable way to meet it; Bartter's group found its bioavailability comparable to calcium carbonate. What makes it work is the weighed number, which the shell merely delivers.
The one hard no: large-breed puppies
FEDIAF's early growth figures, covering puppies under 14 weeks, are tighter than the adult ones at both ends: a minimum of 2.50 g of calcium per 1,000 kcal, a nutritional maximum of 4.00 g, and the ratio held between 1:1 and 1.6:1.
Run the sum. A large-breed puppy eating 1,000 kcal a day on a food sitting at that minimum receives 2.50 g. One egg shell adds 2.07 g. The day totals 4.57 g, which is past the maximum, from one shell.
The ceiling is there for skeletal reasons. FEDIAF cites Hazewinkel's 1985 work and Schoenmakers' in 2000 for the adverse effect of high calcium intake on skeletal development in large breeds, at its worst during early growth. Puppies cannot downregulate calcium absorption the way adults can, so a load an adult would excrete gets built into growing bone.
This is the part I recognise from work. A mistake made on a green in April does not show until July, and by then you are looking at a season of recovery. A large-breed puppy gets one growth window.
Raw shell and Salmonella: how long the risk lasts
Gole and colleagues, in the International Journal of Food Microbiology in 2014, inoculated egg shells at 10⁵ CFU/mL and found every Salmonella isolate still surviving on the shell surface after 21 days at 20 °C. Survival was significantly higher at 20 °C than at 37 °C. A shell left sitting in a warm kitchen is a better home for Salmonella than a shell inside an animal.
This is not theoretical. Eurosurveillance published an investigation in 2026 into a Salmonella Enteritidis outbreak in the Netherlands that ran from June 2023 to September 2025 and produced 227 confirmed cases. The investigators concluded that inadequate processing of contaminated egg shells, before their use in poultry feed, most probably contributed to both the spread and the length of the outbreak.
Heat settles it. The expert panel in Bartter's study agreed that boiling shells for 10 minutes, then cooking the crushed shell for a further 20 minutes in food, would eliminate the egg-associated pathogens they identified. Therdthai's group used harsher treatments for their dog biscuits, holding shell in water at 95 °C for 60 minutes or autoclaving at 121 °C for 15 minutes.
How to prepare egg shell calcium, if you have a reason to
- Get the number first. Ask whoever formulated the diet how many grams of calcium a day this dog needs. Without that figure, the rest of these steps produce a guess in powder form.
- Boil the shells for 10 minutes. This follows the protocol Bartter's expert panel endorsed. Do it with the shells still whole.
- Dry them thoroughly. Damp powder cakes, and cakes cannot be weighed accurately.
- Grind to a fine flour. A coffee or spice grinder works. Coarse fragments are both harder to absorb and sharper going down.
- Weigh the dose, do not spoon it. At 380–401 mg of calcium per gram, 2.5–2.6 g of powder supplies 1 g of calcium. A kitchen scale reading to 0.1 g costs less than a bag of dog food.
- Store it airtight and dry, and label it with the date you made it.
Reading the boundary in your own kitchen
Three questions settle nearly every case. Is the dog eating a food labelled complete? Is the dog a growing large-breed puppy? Has anyone calculated a calcium figure for this particular diet? A yes to either of the first two puts the shells on the compost heap. A no to the third means the diet needs a formulation before it needs a supplement.
I would rather see a dog fed a dull complete food for a decade than a thoughtfully home-cooked one topped up by eye. It is the preference I hold about lawns too, where cut high and never fed beats fed and scalped. Both come from watching what happens when someone applies a good product at a rate nobody measured.

My dog ate an eggshell from the bin, should I worry?
One shell in an adult dog is unlikely to cause a mineral problem. FEDIAF's tolerance data cover 7.1 g of calcium per 1,000 kcal fed for 40 weeks without harm. The real risks are the raw shell's Salmonella load and sharp fragments. Watch for vomiting or diarrhoea, and phone your vet if either appears.
Is eggshell calcium as good as a bought calcium supplement?
For delivering calcium, yes. Bartter's team reported shell calcium's bioavailability as comparable to calcium carbonate, and Schaafsma's analysis found very low lead, cadmium, aluminium and mercury in shell powder. What a bought supplement adds is a stated dose per scoop. With shells, you weigh the powder yourself.
